Over recent years, we’ve seen a growing trend towards couples scaling back their wedding and hosting an altogether more intimate affair. Even though everything is pared back at a smaller wedding, the accompanying music remains a crucial part of making every moment memorable. While booking a DJ is often the first port of call for the big day, a more intimate event can leave pre-recorded tracks feeling rather disconnected. A live band or soloist is usually a better fit for smaller weddings, and the passion the musicians bring offers an incredible atmosphere no matter the length of your guest list.

However, the range of styles on offer is mind-boggling and can often be daunting, so here are a few possibilities to help find what works for you.

Piano or keyboard

Using one of the most versatile instruments available, a pianist can masterfully craft whatever kind of ambience matches your vision. While an organ may overpower in an intimate setting, a piano can channel that same classical wedding feeling in a much softer way. Equally, come the evening time, a skilled player can up the tempo and prove one performer and their keyboard can be just as raucous as any DJ. Wherever your tastes lie, a pianist can be all you need for the soundtrack to your special day.

Jazz

An unconventional option for your wedding is to bring a dash of New Orleans with a jazz band. As any jazz connoisseur will happily tell you, the style can effortlessly flow between romantic balladry and dancefloor-filling grooves. Bands vary wildly in terms of numbers and instruments, so you can mix and match your favourite sounds to suit your preferences. While not typically associated with nuptials, the genre’s fluidity could be a delightful choice for a different wedding.

Harp

Though often found as a member of a string section, a harpist can easily fill a room with gorgeous sounds all by themselves. The gentle music produced from the instrument has long been considered some of the most romantic and intimate in history. A harpist is definitely less overpowering than many other options and functions perfectly as a heavenly background for your day.

Strings

Although the name conjures images of big orchestras and even bigger prices, string sections come in all shapes, sizes, and costs. There are few experiences that can compare with witnessing a live classical performance, and just three or four musicians can capture that orchestral atmosphere for your wedding. Of course, the style does not limit your playlist to Bach, Brahms, and Beethoven. Almost all string sections can arrange your favourite modern songs through a classical lens, creating a wonderfully personal soundtrack.

To sing or not to sing?

Any of the above options can include a vocalist alongside the instrumentation – whether you wish to have one entirely depends on your vision. If the lyrics of your first dance song are special, picking a band with a singer included may be the best way forward. However, if you’re worried about a singer drowning out the conversation between your guests, an instrumental act can be just as poignant.

The choice is yours

We hope this post has inspired you to go your own way when it comes to your wedding soundtrack. Whatever musical accompaniment you opt for, make sure to work closely with your chosen artist in advance, so you can curate a playlist that aligns with your preferences and helps bring your intimate affair to life.
