Do you have trouble finding suits that fit your needs? Not sure what type to get for each season? This article will teach you the basics of how to dress comfortably in any weather.

We’re going to assume that you already have a basic understanding of what pieces are included in a suit, i.e., blazer and dress trousers. You’ll also need a dress shirt, and potentially cufflinks depending on whether or not your dress shirt has buttons.

Finally, you will need a decent pair of dress shoes. A tie may also be necessary, although the tieless look has been growing in recent years. In fact, in Italy these days, it’s more common to see someone in a suit without a tie than with one.

Buying one suit for every season

Don’t want to spend over £10,000? We don’t blame you. It is possible to buy one for every wedding you go to – and you could even double down and buy one for all occasions.

This works particularly well if you’re not really a suit kind of guy – but still recognise that every now and then you have to dress up to the nines.

Cashmere will work well for colder countries – but for hotter countries, it may be difficult for you. Cotton will also work well as a general fabric. Just make sure it’s warm enough for a cold wedding on the beach in England!

How to choose a suit for each season

Summer

What suit fabric is best for a summer wedding?

Summer is probably the easiest season to choose a fabric for. The best by far is either linen. You could also go for a fabric such as wool 140’s – which is a thinner version of the rather dense fabric wool.

What colour is best for a summer wedding?

This is very dependent on personal choice – but the most common would probably be a beige or tan coloured suit. They are the most neutral without being too over the top. If you’re feeling a little more confident and want to stand out – you could choose yellow or light blue. These are incredibly popular in Italian weddings.

Spring

Which suit fabric is best for a spring wedding?

Spring can either be too hot or too cold – so it’s slightly more difficult. Cashmere would be a great choice for a spring fabric. It can be easily taken off it’s too hot, and should keep you warm enough for most countries’ spring climate.

Which suit colour is best for a spring wedding?

Again all of the normal colours apply. Tan, light brown, light blue, navy would all work. It’s important not to show anyone up – so maybe don’t wear something too extravagant.

This is especially true if you’re a stylish person. You don’t want to accidentally end up looking better than the groom. This is also a great opportunity to embrace the tieless look which has been sweeping across Italy and is slowly seeping into the rest of the world.

If it’s your wedding, of course, wear a tie! If it’s someone else’s wedding – you can definitely channel a more business casual look by not wearing a tie but still wearing a suit.

Winter

Which suit fabric is best for a winter wedding?

If you live in a particularly cold country – you could stretch to a Vicuna suit if you have the money for it. These are very thin but also exceptionally warm (which is one of the reasons Vicuna is such an expensive fabric!)

Otherwise, if you don’t have the money, you can buy a wool suit. Make sure you don’t accidentally buy one that is thin. If you look for 100% wool then you should be fine. Wool will keep you snug as a bug in a rug.

Which colour is the best for a winter wedding?

There are only really 3 options here – navy, black, grey, or tan. This is the holy alliance of suit colours and anything else at a winter wedding will look strange or out of place.

Here’s a great example of a Cesare Attolini suit that would be perfect for a winter wedding (100% wool):

Autumn

What fabric is best for an autumn wedding?

If you’ve got an autumn wedding coming up and have to choose a suit – we can’t really recommend anything better than cashmere. Cashmere is perfect for autumn because it’s breathable for humid countries and will keep you warm enough without overheating when the sun comes out.

What suit colour is best for an autumn wedding?

Autumn and spring both give you the most opportunity to experiment. Green is a wonderful colour to add to your wardrobe, a forest green will merge perfectly with the colours of autumn. Grey, navy, tan, or black or always safe choices. Burgundy is also a fantastic colour without going as far as bright red which should be exclusively saved for summer.

What accessories should I wear for a wedding?

Depending on how formally you are dressed, you may want to add an accessory or two to your shopping list. A pocket square can be a fantastic addition to your wardrobe. Cufflinks may be necessary, depending on your dress shirt. A pair of handmade shoes can finish off a look, and a scarf depending on how cold it is out there!

Conclusion

There are many fabrics and colours that work for different seasons. If you want to stand out at your wedding or event, be creative with what you wear! But remember the golden rule – If it’s not your wedding, don’t show up the groom by wearing a suit that will make you stand out more than him!
