Your wedding is one of the biggest milestones in your life and definitely a cause for celebration. With this in mind, it can be easy for costs to build up as you try to make it a special day to remember. It’s estimated that the average wedding in the UK costs £18,400 but it’s not unknown to go far above this figure.

This isn’t always achievable for every couple and the financial aftermath can cause a lot of stress for newlyweds. Here are some tricks and tips for creating a budget for your wedding day and sticking to it so you can enjoy one of the biggest days of your life without worrying about finances.

Create a budget

Before you make any big decisions, it’s a good idea to sit down and create a realistic budget based on how much you can reasonably spend on your big day. This will help you identify which areas of the wedding are going to require more money and how much you’ll need to set aside as you get closer to the big day.

Boosting your credit score could open up new lines of finance for you such as increasing your eligibility for a loan or credit card. These could cover initial costs and you could pay it back in reasonable bite-size chunks.

Set expectations

With TV shows and social media full to the brim with newly-weds-to-be and lavish wedding ceremonies, it can influence your tastes and encourage you to overindulge. It’s important to discuss what aspects of your ceremony you need and what you can realistically afford.

It can be disappointing when you can’t stick fast to your wedding plan. Given time to adjust your expectations, you’ll find that you’ll have the day of your dreams, regardless of whether you have the most expensive cake or dress.

Shop around

You might be tempted to choose the first few vendors you see but shopping around will help you find the best deal. Your wedding costs will partly come down to how good of a bargain hunter you are so it’s worth doing your research for the most cost-effective boutiques or venues. Don’t be afraid to haggle – you’ll be paying the price tag after all!

DIY

Don’t underestimate the power of DIY when it comes to your wedding décor! From wedding invitations and seat covers to floral arrangements, there are plenty of great DIY wedding décor ideas to go through.

You can make your table centrepieces more personal with pictures of you and your loved one. Or, you could recycle coloured glass vases and jars to provide the perfect vessel for your floral arrangements.
